In this conversation, Aled explains the difference between celibacy and asexuality, and what it means to be asexual. When we come back to it is in the form of Daniel and Aled having a conversation about him being demisexual. Plus, the relationship being an mlm one does spice the format up at least for books, for fanfiction not so much.īut Daniel and Frances don’t know about demisexuality yet, and we leave the question of Aled’s sexuality for a while. That being said, even the typical format isn’t usually done in a way that accurately portrays the character as demi or respects demi people, but seeing as this one does, the typical format isn’t such a bad thing. Now, Aled only liking Daniel is the stereotypical demisexual one and only type story, which doesn’t fit all demisexuals, but there are demisexuals for who this is accurate so it’s not a bad portrayal, just typical. Aled sounds like maybe he could also be demiromantic from now he talks, but he doesn’t explicitly identify as it so that’s up in the air- though there’s the possibility he just doesn’t use the split attraction model. So to see it being treated with the same respect as other sexualities is great and it’s representation for those who identify solely as demisexual.

Aled doesn’t identify as gay or bi, just demisexual, which is cool to see because demisexuality is usually called a modifier to other sexualities, which is fine for those who feel that way, but I and many other demis don’t. It makes it so much more believable! And it especially drives home the point that demisexuality is a real orientation because Aled only felt attracted to the guy he’d known his entire life and nobody else- that’s not just being picky. This whole conversation is a great way of showing and not telling the readers that a character is demisexual.

The only thing I’d say is I might like for it to be discussed more but I’m not sure I want that because it might make it more forced or awkward and it got just as much discussion as the other sexualities so no complaints over here. In fact, I expected to have things to nitpick about the representation but I really don’t. Aled is a pretty good representation of demisexuality in a way that’s clear why it’s different from “just being picky”, explains that it’s on the asexual spectrum, and isn’t awkward or forced. As a demisexual person, it’s so rare to see us represented and actually represented in way that reflects real life demisexual experiences accurately. Aled is demisexual and the reason I bought this book in the first place. He’s dating Aled but he fears Aled doesn’t actually like him and is afraid he’s pressuring Aled into things he doesn’t want to do.Īled is the book’s aspec representation and the character I will be discussing primarily. Also Frances is pretty relatable in these flashback scenes, like when she says one of the reasons she liked Carys was because she was the only other queer girl she knew or when Carys came out to her and she almost came out in return but didn’t (I hate that feeling).ĭaniel is an Asian gay guy who seems uptight and snobby at first but actually isn’t a bad guy. She’s also the object of a younger Frances’s affections, though she outgrows this crush and the two of them remain platonic. She’s laidback and nice but doesn’t do too well in school.Ĭarys is a lesbian who ran away from home two years ago and hasn’t been seen since. The main character is Frances, a mixed race bisexual girl who has high academic ambitions. Radio Silence has 1 gay character, 1 lesbian character, 1 bisexual character, and a demisexual character! There’s also a character that is later revealed to be pansexual in a short story. Issues like not doing well in school, abusive parents (and more) are discussed. The main relationship is a platonic friendship.ģ out of the 5 main characters aren’t white and none of them are straight. Spoilers for representation and how it is discussed and portrayed.įor those who don’t like romance, the one romance in the book is an established relationship between two side characters and though there’s discussion of a past crush the main character had, she doesn’t end up in a relationship or have a romantic plot with anyone.
